Categories
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Categories organize your products into a hierarchical tree. Build categories and subcategories, rearrange them with drag-and-drop, add SEO metadata to each one, and assign products to as many categories as you need. Categories are also created automatically when you import products from connected platforms.
Navigation
Section titled “Navigation”Sidebar: Categories
URL: /admin/categories
To edit a specific category, open /admin/categories/{id}/edit — for example /admin/categories/2/edit. The list can be viewed as a tree or a flat list, with search and an option to show inactive categories.
Categories and subcategories
Section titled “Categories and subcategories”Every category can have a parent, so categories nest into subcategories to form a tree:
- The tree supports up to 10 levels deep — this limit is enforced when you create or move a category.
- Root categories are those with no parent; everything beneath a category is its subcategories (children).
- Each category tracks its level (depth) and a path, which MicroPIM maintains automatically as you move categories around.
How categories are imported
Section titled “How categories are imported”When you import or sync products from a connected platform, MicroPIM builds the category tree for you:
- Full-tree platforms (such as Magento and Merchant Pro) pull the platform’s category hierarchy and recreate the parent/child structure in MicroPIM, matching existing categories by their platform ID and creating any that are missing.
- Flat-category platforms (such as Shopify) create a category from the product’s type when category creation is enabled.
Imported categories keep a reference to their source platform in their integration data, so re-syncing updates the same categories instead of duplicating them.
Editing categories
Section titled “Editing categories”Open a category’s edit page to change its details, or rearrange the tree directly:
- Edit form — update the fields below.
- Drag and drop — reorder categories within a level and reparent them by dragging one category onto another. MicroPIM revalidates depth and prevents moves that would create a loop (a category can’t become a child of its own subcategory) or exceed the 10-level limit, then recalculates paths for the moved branch.
- Toggle status — activate or deactivate a category.
- Bulk actions — enable, disable, or delete several categories at once.
Edit form fields
Section titled “Edit form fields”| Field | Description |

Products in categories
Section titled “Products in categories”A product can belong to many categories, and each category can hold many products. The tree shows a product count per category, so you can see how the catalog is distributed and find empty categories. Within a category, products can be ordered manually or by a sort strategy.
